A WhatsApp chatbot in South Africa costs two things: Meta's conversation fees on the WhatsApp Business Platform, and the build that connects the bot to your leads and follow-ups. There is no honest single rand price, because volume and the number of systems change the job. We price it after an audit of one workflow.
What are you actually paying for?
Meta charges for conversations on the WhatsApp Business Platform. The categories and rates change, so read Meta's current pricing rather than a screenshot in a proposal.
The second cost is the setup. A bot that only repeats three answers is a small job. A bot that writes a lead, notifies a salesperson, and stops when a human should step in is a workflow. Those are not the same quote.
Anyone who gives you a single rand amount before seeing that workflow is guessing.
When does a chatbot pay off?
It pays off when the alternative is a missed message. After-hours enquiries, a front desk that cannot watch the phone, and a sales team that logs chats the next morning are the usual cases.
It does not pay off when you receive a handful of messages and someone already answers them the same hour. In that case the WhatsApp Business app is the whole system.
| Situation | Sensible setup |
|---|---|
| A few chats a day, one owner | WhatsApp Business app |
| Leads must land in a CRM | Platform plus a build |
| Same questions all day | A scripted bot with a human handoff |
| You want to blast a bought list | Do not. That is how numbers get restricted |
What is the difference between a cheap bot and a useful one?
A cheap bot is a menu. A useful bot finishes a job: the lead exists in the system your team already opens, and the person knows when to take over.
What does setup actually include?
Setup needs four things:
- A WhatsApp Business number on the official platform, not a personal SIM running an unofficial sender.
- The list of questions the bot may answer, written by you.
- The rule for handoff, including who gets the chat and how fast.
- The system where the lead is stored, which is usually the CRM you already have.
Meta's conversation fees sit on top of that. They move. Check the current rate card in the WhatsApp Business Platform documentation when you compare quotes, so two proposals are priced against the same Meta bill.
If a quote is only a monthly widget fee and never mentions the CRM or the handoff, you are buying a menu. The menu is cheap because it does not finish the job.
That job is lead generation automation. If the team is in Johannesburg, the local page is AI automation in Johannesburg. The country overview is AI automation in South Africa. The marketing side of the same channel is WhatsApp marketing automation.
